Poetry is my superhero

I am able to ferret out a couple of my poems, one of which is the original copy of the award-winning four-liner which is plastered all over the LRT-2 train coaches in Manila (also published in audio form with Philippine prima ballerina Lisa Macuja lending her voice to recite it. I was in tears. Download the audio here) :

a train window picture show: the salmon-hued skyline yielding to
a blue-black backdrop of stars
and the Cheshire cat-grin of the crescent moon;
a puppet show of birds in flight,
of birds balanced by their matchbox legs
on a tapestry of electric lines.
A rainbow sea of dripping umbrellas,
strangers elbow to elbow under the
late-afternoon downpour: soaked shoes and
a drenched newspaper folded beneath a sleeved arm.

This poem, I wrote especially for illustrator Robert Alejandro. I typed the poem up on the comments portion of his personal blog and later, he ‘gifted’ me with a thank-you wall post on Facebook.

I have always fancied
poets who
chronicle travels with

word play and metaphors.
Say, Cambodia as prepossessing
or a Nordic skyline– a tapestry of hues.

But a sketch of places, un-moving picture shows in watercolor
Depicted by an artist

on an immaculate-white of paper
is poetry all the same:
adjectives represented by lines
metaphors, by colors.
